Rebecca Ann Seagle
Rebecca won the Donald Strauss Foundation Scholarship. Her project is "ADD: Fostering A Comprehensive Approach to Academic Success". The purpose of the project is to create a video and accompanying pamphlet to be distributed to school districts and families to better serve the needs of K-12 students with ADD in any of its varieties.
Amy Avelar
Amy has been awarded a 2005 National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship.
As an NSF Graduate Research Scholar, Amy will pursue her Ph.D. at UCR, conducting research on carborane acids, known as “superacids” for their strength. They hold great promise in improving the quality and octane rating of gasoline, developing polymers and synthesizing pharmaceuticals.
Daniel Gil-Marca
Daniel is the 2005 Jack Kent Cooke Scholarship recipient.
By this year’s application deadline, college and universities in all 50 states plus the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico had nominated 1,290 candidates for the Foundation’s Graduate Scholarship for college seniors and recent alumni. This is one of the largest and most competitive scholarships offered in the US.
Sean William Kaloostian
Sean was selected to be one of the sixteen regional finalists to compete for the prestigious Rhodes Scholarships for 2006.
The Rhodes competition this year received 903 applications for the 32 scholarships. Sean is the first UCR undergraduate in over twenty years to make it this far in the competition. Sean is a junior, who is pursuing a triple major in Psychology, Sociology and the Biological Sciences. He is in the top 1% of his class, and he plans to graduate in three years.

The Rhodes Scholarship

All fields of study except the MBA for either graduate work or a second B.A. at Oxford University; must be under 24 and have athletic background to apply
Campus Deadline: September 15
It is imperative to start the application process in spring to be competitive!

Application for the highly prestigious Rhodes Scholarship requires institutional nomination. Candidates of “extraordinary intellectual distinction” who demonstrate the qualities of mind that “offer the promise of effective service to the world in the decades ahead” are desired. The four selection criteria include: literary and scholastic attainments; success in sports; leadership; community service and volunteer work. Provides all educational costs plus tuition and a maintenance allowance for 2 to 3 years of study at the renowned Oxford University.

George J. Mitchell Scholarships
Graduate; requires UCR nomination
Campus Deadline: September 15
Scholarship for 1 year of Graduate study at one of seven universities in the Republic of Ireland.

Jacob K. Javits Fellowship Program
Seniors & 1st-year graduate students: Must have official GRE scores in hand at time of application!
Deadline: Early October
Federally-funded graduate fellowship for graduate study leading to the Ph.D. (or highest available degree program in a field) in the arts, humanities and social sciences. Provides payment to school in lieu of tuition and approx. $30,000 stipend to fellows for up to 4 years. Must demonstrate exceptional promise and financial need. Must file federal FAFSA form in January.

Gates Cambridge Scholarships
Study at the University of Cambridge in any of the following areas:
-Graduate Study (e.g. PhD, MPhil, Diploma, PgC,)
-Affiliated study (i.e. a second undergraduate degree)
-MBBChir in Clinical Studies
-MBA (Masters in Business Administration)
Deadline: mid October
TARGET CAMPUS MAILING DATE FOR TIMELY ARRIVAL IN THE UK: October 1
(start the application process in Spring or early Summer)
Students apply for admission to their program of choice through the regular University of Cambridge admission procedures and are considered for the prestigious and generous scholarship from the Gates Trust at the same time. It covers tuition, travel, university fees and other expenses, and a living stipend for up to five years.

Fulbright Program
Juniors & Seniors planning graduate study abroad; requires UCR nomination.
Application Period: May 1 - October 1

The Fulbright Program provides grants for Scholars and Professionals, and Teachers and Administrators from the U.S. and other countries.

The flagship international educational program sponsored by the United States Government, the Fulbright Program is designed to "increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries..." With this goal, the Fulbright Program has provided more than 250,000 participants - chosen for their academic merit and leadership potential - with the opportunity to study and teach in each other's countries, exchange ideas, and develop joint solutions to address shared concerns.

USA Today: All-USA Academic Team

Undergraduate
Deadline: Nominations due November 25
Sixty students are named to the First, Second, and Third Academic Teams.  They are featured in a two-page spread in USA Today.  The 20 members of the First Team each receive a $2,500 cash award.  The criteria are designed Students must be nominated.  Two Honors students have been named to the First Academic Team in the past four years.

Ford Foundation Predoctoral Diversity Fellowship
Seniors & continuing graduate students at the pre-doctoral stage
Deadline: mid-November
Graduate fellowship for study in a research-based program leading to the Ph.D. Intended to diversify the academy by supporting students from groups whose under-representation has been severe and long-standing, and any student who demonstrates a likelihood of using the diversity of human experience as an educational resource in teaching and scholarship. Provides payment to school in lieu of tuition & fees and a $20,000 stipend to the fellow for 3 consecutive years.

National Science Foundation
Graduate Research Fellowship Program
Seniors & 1st-year graduate students: Science, Social Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics
Deadlines vary by discipline: early November
The National Science Foundation aims to ensure the vitality of the human resource base in science, social science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, and to reinforce its diversity by supporting graduate students who are pursuing research-based master’s and doctoral degrees. Provides payment to the institution in lieu of tuition and a $30,000 stipend to the fellow for 3 years.

National Institutes of Health Graduate Partnership Program

Including:
University of Cambridge Health Science Research Scholars &
University of Oxford Scholars in Biomedical Research

Deadline: Early January
Graduate students in NIH-University partnership programs receive an NIH Intramural Research Training Award for stipend, health benefits, and tuition support as needed.

Formal collaborative agreements between NIH and leading national & international PhD programs, including the prestigious Oxford and Cambridge universities in the UK. Students choose their primary research mentor at NIH or their home campus, often developing a collaborative project with two mentors that spans both. Students are encouraged to learn the language of and build expertise across more than one field or discipline. Partnership students complete the qualifying exam, dissertation proposals, and dissertation research as do other students at their home university, but also do laboratory rotations at the NIH.

 

Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship
Mathematics, Natural Sciences, Engineering: 2nd & 3rd Year students; requires UCR nomination
Campus Deadline: January 1
The purpose is to provide a continuing source of highly qualified individuals in the fields of science, mathematics and engineering. The awards will be made on the basis of merit to two groups of students -- those who will be college juniors and those who will be college seniors in the next academic year (2003-04) -- who have outstanding potential and intend to pursue careers in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering. Each scholarship covers eligible expenses for undergraduate tuition, fees, books, and room and board, up to a maximum of $7,500 annually.

Harry S. Truman Scholarship
Government and Public Service: Junior Status; requires UCR nomination

Up to $30,000 in support of graduate studies leading to a public service-related degree.

Morris K. Udall Foundation
Environment; Native American tribal policy or health care: 2nd & 3rd Year Students; requires UCR nomination
Campus Deadline: February 1
Any student who has demonstrated a commitment to careers related to the environment, or Native American or Alaska Native students committed to careers related to Native health care or tribal public policy. $5,000

Donald Strauss Scholarship
Juniors applying to use the award for a project during their senior year.
Campus Deadline: February 15
A $10,000 scholarship is available to students interested in performing a community or public service project. Applicants are nominated by UCR to the Strauss Scholarship Foundation. Candidates must submit a 4-page project proposal, a current official transcript, 2 or 3 letters of recommendation, and a one page resume of current and past community service. Applications are available at the Financial Aid Office, 1156 Hinderaker Hall.

Jack Kent Cooke Fellowship
Seniors & recent graduates: any field; requires UCR nomination
Campus Deadline: February 15
For students planning to attend graduate or professional school for the first time next fall. Provides tuition, fees & living expenses up to $50,000 annually, for up to six years.

James Madison Memorial Fellowship

Secondary teacher social studies: graduate
Deadline: March 1
Up to $24,000 per year for students planning to become a secondary level teacher in American History, American Government, or social studies.
