Honors Societies at UC Riverside

For each type of student on a college campus there are a wide range of organizations that one can become affiliated with.  Honor societies are one of the types of organizations out there.  There are Honor Societies for a wide range of purposes.   There are regional, national, international societies, there are societies for specific class levels or types of students, there are societies that have specific missions or goals and there are discipline specific ones.  Even the way in which a student is invited to join a society varies depending on the type.  Most Honor Societies charge a fee, mainly a lifetime membership fee.  The benefits of joining vary and are weighted differently depending on the student.  Many societies have a chapter presence on the campus that provides leadership, community service and/or a wide range of other valuable assets.  Many honor societies offer scholarship opportunities and/or discounts on items that are of value to an undergraduate. These benefits should be included in your pro/con list when making the decision to join.

Some students join every single society that they receive an invitation from.  Others decide to only join a few.  The choice is yours alone.

The ACHS (Association of College Honor Societies) is an organization that offers certification for college and university honor societies.  They have some good advice on their site to help you make the decision about joining a particular group.  Be aware that not all societies request certification so there can be high end society not on their certification list.

Phi Beta Kappa, the nation’s oldest, largest and most prestigious academic honor society, was founded on December 5, 1776 by five students at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. The UCR chapter, designated Iota of California, was chartered in 1964.  UCR faculty members nominate students to become inductee’s of this prestigious society.  Election to Phi Beta Kappa is very competitive, based on grade point average and other selection criteria. Each year, approximately five percent of the graduating class (seniors) and one percent of juniors are elected to UCR’s Phi Beta Kappa chapter.
