“Why
Honors?” you might ask… Well, that’s a very good question, with lots of
possible answers! For me, “Honors” runs in the family! My sister was an
active part of the Honors Program during her years at UCR, and now I’m
following in her footsteps. I can tell you that aside from comfy couches
and pillows to relax on between classes, a computer lab to get your work
done at school, and yummy food every Wednesday morning, the Honors
Program has much more to offer! The best part of the University Honors
Program is the personal relationship that you get to build with the
staff members, who are always there for you in times of joy and
hardship. Overall, the Honors Program takes hundreds of individuals with
different backgrounds and from different places, and makes them into one
big family away from home!

"I was one of those incoming freshman that was hesitant of joining
the program because I did not want to be taking hard classes and being
around 'nerds' throughout my years of college. To my dismay, there
are still hard classes in college, but surprisingly none of them are
the Honors courses. Isn't that
something. My Honors experience has led me to meet incredible,
'non-nerdy' people from with unique background and experiences. The one
thing I cherish the most about the program is that it is personal, meaning
the UHP staff makes an effort to know who you are and are willing to help
you as much as they can."

Honors
is a great program to be a part of. I love that as a freshman, you have
a mentor who genuinely cares about you and helps guide you though the
craziness of your first year in college! I know that I would have been
lost if my mentor hadn’t given me tips on what classes to take, sending
us updates about campus activities and resources, and just being there
to listen and to reassure me in the activities I got involved in and the
choices I made. Not only is your mentor there for you, but there’s also
an awesome staff is always there for you to help you during your college
year, lending you a hand with academics issues, informing you of cool
opportunities to further your personal growth, and just being there when
ever you need them. They’re there to support you!

If
I were a ship, the University Honors Program would be the captain. Upon
arriving to UCR, I was lost at sea. There were so many people to meet,
so many activities to get involved in, numerous classes to choose from,
and understandably, it was overwhelming. The Honors Program helped steer
me in the right direction and have continually blown my sails towards my
development into an educated, active student. I have had the unique
opportunity of giving back to the Honors Program by becoming a peer
mentor, assisting first year students in tackling their first year
obstacles. The entire Honors Program served as my peer mentor during my
first year and it is now satisfying to use the knowledge and kindness
that they have shown me on the next generation of UCR Honors
students. |

"My
experience with the Honors Department has been exceptional, starting
with my participation in the week-long Summer
University Honors Program to my participation as a
Peer Mentor this year, getting the
opportunity to teach freshman college students. One highlight of the
Honors mission is a focus on community
service unlike any other program. The academic strength, community
service standards, and personal growth-- that is why I chose the
University Honors Program." |

Being
in the Honors Program has truly enriched my college experience. I enjoy
meeting all the people in the program from the students to the faculty.
Living in the Honors hall my first year and then becoming the RA for one
of the honors hall has given me the chance to meet terrific and
wonderful people. These people give me the inspiration and joy everyday
of my life to work hard and become successful. Some of my greatest
memories here at UCR have been with people from the Honors Program.
Besides the people, I like taking the smaller classes that are offered
by the Honors Program because it allows the professor and I to get to
know each other better. |

The
main advantage to being in the Honors Program is the community of peers
that you are exposed to. Students involved in the Honors Program are
some of the most intelligent and highest achieving students at UC
Riverside. As a freshman, my peer mentor introduced me to the campus and
guided me to success. He inspired me to get involved in undergraduate
research with the USDA Forest Service during my first summer break. I
owe a debt of gratitude to my peers for pushing me to go beyond my
limits. |

The
Honors Program has been one of the best experiences in my career at UCR
thus far. Although I was hesitant in joining, I have not regretted my
decision since. UHP has provided me with a network of peers that always
encourage me to do my best in both my academic and extracurricular
activities. Moreover, the UHP staff has given me guidance in not only
developing as a student, but as a citizen as well. Lastly, as a commuter
student, I cannot imagine life without the priority registration pin;
which allows me to design my schedule of classes without every worrying
about a class filling up before I even get the chance to register.

"UHP is a great tool to help students successfully make the
transition from high school to college. While many students have a hard
time adjusting during the first quarter, most honors students have an
easier transition because they are surrounded and supported by a team of
advisors, peers who are self-motivated, and
mentors who can guide them. There are also other advantages and
perks that come along with the label "honors student" like
early registration. We register the same time as seniors and some
athletes. Not only does this alleviate the stress of registering and
fighting over classes, but I personally think that a student will do
much better if they can choose the classes and times that they want.
(For example, I know that I would fail a 7 am class) Not every one has
the opportunity to join the University Honors Program. It is definitely
a privilege and honor to be a part of such a distinguished
program." |

Being
a member of the Honors Program has substantially enriched my college
experience. On a large research university campus were one can easily
get lost in the crowd, the Honors Program provides a more personal and
supportive atmosphere. In addition to the great benefits of priority
registration, Honors seminars, involvement in community service etc, the
Honors Program and its dedicated staff is one of my most valuable
resources on campus. It’s a learning community that’ll allow you to get
the most out of your college experience. |
