Featured News

Join the UHP in congratulating Gabriel Murillo. He has recently found out some good news. One, he is now slated to start as a graduate student with UCR’s math department after graduating with a BS in Mathematics/Pure Mathematics this year. He currently holds an outstanding grade point average of over a 3.8. Gabriel has been involved in undergraduate research in a variety of ways, last summer through the CSU San Bernardino Math department’s REU. His work has now been accepted for publication in the spring issue of the Rose Hulman Undergraduate Math Journal (http://www.rose-hulman.edu/mathjournal/). This journal is supposedly only one of two undergraduate math journals.

This summer Mr. Murillo finds himself flying across country to participate in the Harvard Department of Biostatistics Summer Program in Quantitative Sciences (http://biosun1.harvard.edu/diversity/summer/spb-intro.html)

And last but not least, he has found out that the work he has been undertaking with Dr. Sam Nelson and a fellow Undergraduate student, Anthony Thompson, has been accepted for publication in The Journal of Knot Theory and its Ramifications. (http://www.worldscinet.com/jktr/jktr.shtml) Mr. Murillo is completing his Honors Thesis, which he will present at the 2006 Upper Division Honors conference this May. This is just a taste of what Mr. Murillo’s academic career has included, and says nothing of his glowing personality and friendliness. He has worked with other students to bring the joy of research to all.

CONGRATULATIONS TO A RHODES SCHOLARSHIP FINALIST

Mr. Sean Kaloostian was selected to be one of the sixteen regional finalists to compete for the prestigious Rhodes Scholarships for 2006. The Rhodes competition this year received 903 applications for the 32 scholarships. Sean is the first UCR undergraduate in over twenty years to make it this far in the competition. Sean is a junior, who is pursuing a triple major in Psychology, Sociology and the Biological Sciences. He is in the top 1% of his class, and he plans to graduate in three years. Mr. Kaloostian is truly an extraordinary young man. In his leadership endeavors, whether within the educational setting, or participating in athletics, or any other capacity in which he can spread his excitement and shares his talents with others, Sean gives his best effort. He is able to motivate others to achieve their personal best. In short, Mr. Kaloostian represents the very best of our students at the University of California, Riverside. He is a symbol of academic excellence and leadership. If you want to find out more about Sean follow this link: http://www.honors.ucr.edu/Peer_Mentor/Sean_K.htm

The Rhodes Scholarships, the oldest international fellowships, were initiated after the death of Cecil Rhodes in 1902, and bring outstanding students from many countries around the world to the University of Oxford. The first American Scholars entered Oxford in 1904. American Rhodes Scholars are selected through a decentralized process by which regional selection committees choose 32 Scholars each year representing the fifty states. Through 2004, applicants from more than 300 American colleges and universities had been selected as Rhodes Scholars. Extraordinary intellectual distinction is a necessary but not a sufficient condition for election to a Rhodes Scholarship. Selection committees are charged to seek excellence in qualities of mind and in qualities of person which, in combination, offer the promise of effective service to the world in the decades ahead. The Rhodes Scholarships, in short, are investments in individuals rather than in project proposals. Through the years, Rhodes Scholars have pursued studies in all of the varied fields available at the University of Oxford. Election to the Scholarship is for two years. To find out how you can apply for the Rhodes Scholarships follow this link: http://www.rhodesscholar.org/
