UHP Peer Mentor: Ndeye Fatu Sesay

Hello! My name is Ndeye Fatu Sesay and I am a third year political Science and International Relations major and a French minor. I am originally from the beautiful West Coast of Africa, Sierra Leone to be exact. I have also lived in Kenya, Tanzania, and Cote D’Ivoire, and came to the USA about four years ago as a result of a Coup détat in Cote D’Ivoire . Although I love the USA, there is no place like the mother land, and it has been wonderful spending the summer in West Africa, sampling the sumptuous foods, seeing the smiling faces of my country men, and seeing the progress that has been made so far in Africa.

I am sure by now you may have figured out that I am quite taken with Africa, hence my interests lay in African politics, especially in the Western region. Beyond that I am quite enamoured with the culture in terms of arts, folklore, poetry, and I have enjoyed immersing myself in every aspect of my people.

I also enjoy learning different languages because I find human expression extremely interesting, and over the years I have learned that many times the most interesting conversation have very few words, but beautiful hand gestures and sounds that may express surprise or happiness. I like to dance, and most of all, I live life to the fullest while respecting the responsibilities that I have. I also love reading, and I can tell great stories (ask me the story about bra rabbit sometime, I promise to tell).

I hope to go to Law School and study international law in the future. From there I hope to return back to Africa and work for the United Nations and become involved in helping to rebuild a prosperous, peaceful, democratic, and happy Sierra Leone after the immense wreckage caused by the ten year civil war. I am confident I can make a difference at home someday, especially in empowering women in decision making at the highest possible level. That is my ultimate dream.
