UHP Peer Mentor: Katherine Hawkins

Hi everyone! I’m Katherine Hawkins (everyone usually just calls me Katie), I will be in my fourth year of Biological Sciences studies, and I’m from Highland, California. (By the way, the picture is of me using the mirror as an extra whiteboard to study for an O-chem final).

So…random facts about me: I have a car named Hedwig; I know how to sew a pair of jeans; I love coffee; and I can retain trivial facts for extended periods of time. My passions are science, sewing, and reading; my favorite books range from The Bourne Identity to Harry Potter to Dubin’s Guide to Rapid EKG Interpretation. Outside of my love of science and my interest in anatomy and physiology, I studied classical ballet throughout high school and I still love dancing. I get to do research in an organic chemistry lab…it usually involves running reactions and occasionally lighting things on fire (accidentally). I love to travel and I dream of someday practicing international medicine in areas in need of health care; this goal was largely influenced by my experience in Tanzania, Africa.

I look forward to meeting you this year!!

Looking for Community Service?

For community service, I would recommend Conversation Partners…is there any better opportunity to sit down and talk to brilliant grad students from all around the world? Most of them are more than happy to share their culture with you during the conversations and it is always interesting. If you’re not sure it’s for you, I would encourage you to find something that you really truly look forward to doing to get the most out of your experience.
