UHP Peer Mentor: Alex Myerchin

Good morning students and googlers! I'm Alex Myerchin and I'm a fourth-year Theatre major. However, this is my fifth major - having previously been Physics, Philosophy, Chemistry, and Biological Sciences (in descending chronological order, of course). I hail from San Bernardino, CA (as if there were more than one) and graduated with the IB Diploma from Cajon HS.

Over my many four years here at UCR, I've gone from Pre-Med (which I still know tons about since I took all the classes, so email me any questions you have to Pre-Researcher-in-Chemistry to Pre-Logician to Pre-Astronaut (USAF included), and finally now to Pre-starving artist. Who knows? You might even see me in a show on campus....or bringing you your food? THAT'S RIGHT (no need to be alarmed, I'm just gonna talk in caps) LIKE ALL GOOD STAR-TO-BEs I CURRENTLY WORK AS A BARTENDER AND WAITER AT THE CHEESECAKE FACTORY. Or the CCF as I say.

If I had some words of advice- or better yet, what I wish others had said to me - it would be to follow your heart. I cannot tell you how difficult the next 3-5 years of your lives will be if you make yourself unhappy. It's a lot easier to get up at 7 am to do what you WANT to do, then something you don't. Follow your passions and major in what you want to major, not what others prefer you to major in. And if those who are preferring you major in something and paying the bills, I suggest you take major loans and I'll pay them for you when I'm rich and/or famous...not. But seriously.

As for me, I am a HUGE fan of snow cones, sushi, The Simpsons, South Park, jokes, club soda by itself, throwing things into the air and catching them, whistling, the obligatory walk on the beach, and of course snuggling up and playing my Banjo. Adieu!

Looking for Community Service?

I would suggest you venture down to a local hospital and apply for a volunteer position. Riverside Community Hospital has a great volunteer program, and it looks great for med-schools.
