The PBK key, the Society’s official insignia and emblem, is one of the
nation’s most distinctive symbols. The original key adopted at the first meeting
of the Society was a square silver medal, engraved on one side with the letters
SP, the initials of the Latin words Societas Philosophiae (Philosophical
Society), and the date December 5, 1776 represents the beginning of the Society.
On the other side, the initials of the Greek motto which translates to “Love
of Learning is the Guide of Life.” The stars represent the aims of the Society:
Friendship, Morality and Literature. The pointing hand symbolizes aspiration
towards the aims.
Phi Beta Kappa has become the nation’s leading advocate for the liberal arts
and sciences at the undergraduate level. Phi Beta Kappa elects over 15,000
members a year from 270 chapters across the United States.
