UCR’s Chapter – IOTA

The UC Riverside (UCR) chapter, designated Iota of California, was chartered in 1964. UCR was the third campus of the University of California, after Berkeley and Los Angeles, to have a chapter of Phi Beta Kappa.

Picture of Phi Beta Kappa KeyPhi Beta Kappa may elect approximately 10 percent of seniors majoring in liberal subject areas of the arts and sciences. Scholarly achievement, character, and broad cultural interests are the bases for election by UCR's Iota Chapter. Grades earned in applied or professional courses are not counted in computing GPA. All prospective members must have the equivalent of level four (intermediate skill level) of a foreign language and some significant evidence of breadth through courses beyond those required for the major or by the student's college or other demonstration of academic excellence across a diversity of fields. Students in the College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences are strongly encouraged to take courses in mathematics, biological sciences, and physical sciences. Likewise, students in the College of Natural and Agricultural Sciences must have breadth beyond their own college demonstrated by taking courses in humanities, arts, and/or social sciences. A few students with exceptionally good records may be elected during their junior year.
