the Social Committee brought on the games, which was the highlight
of the day. Though the games seemed simple enough, it was a
challenge for all the groups as they worked together to carry the
ping pong balls across the room with a straw, drop Q-tips into a
small Coca-cola bottle without getting too close to the bottle, and
pass the oranges without using their hands. “The orange game was
fun. I was laughing so hard I cried,” commented 1st year student
Stephanie Nguyen. Some of the participants’ dexterity stood out
among others. For instance, Rachael Payan, an Honors Peer Mentor,
tactfully carried the ping-pong ball with her straw with ease and
finesse while many others struggled to pick it off the ground. Might
I add that that the game was deceivingly harder than it looked.
Everyone giggled and laughed as our colleagues tried to outshine the
other groups and come out as victors for that game. The Welcome Back
was a great success with over seventy students attending the event.
Sandy Chansamone, a 3rd year student, agreed: “I thought it was
fun. There was good food and we got to meet a lot of new people.”

The Welcome Back on Saturday, October 12 was carried out successfully
and merrily for the first years and returners. This was a time for all
Honors students to come together, socialize with new and returning
students and just have fun. It was a beautiful, warm morning at
Pentland Hills when the peer mentors first began setting up the tables
and chairs in the room in preparation for the coming students. As our
staff members Kathy Jones and Christina Agda busily laid out the
sub-sandwiches and snacks, sophomore peer mentor Vivian Ngo rushed
back and forth getting supplies for the activities. In the meantime,
with Enrique Iglesias playing in the background, other mentors
finished setting up while others went to recruit the Honors’
residents at A&I resident hall.
Then, after Dr. John Fischer took up the microphone and welcomed everyone, the party began. After introducing the students and having lunch, |
