Welcome to Our Learning CommunityWelcome to the University Honors Program (UHP). In this innovative program students are invited to participate in seminars, courses, and a wide variety of projects intended to enhance their total university experience. Established in 1989 with a major grant from the Ford Foundation, the University Honors Program (UHP) is divided into three key components: the Lower Division Program, the Upper Division Program and the Personal Growth and Community Service Projects. In the Lower Division Program, students take a minimum of four honors seminars (or honors sections of courses). Additionally, students participate in the first year Colloquium, which includes a set of workshops on research skills and a series of lectures by some of the most distinguished and stimulating UCR faculty. These workshops and lectures give a challenging and exciting introduction to university research. In the sophomore year, internships, summer programs, and other activities are available providing "hands-on" experience on campus, in the Riverside community, and nationwide. The Upper Division Program culminates in a senior thesis project, portfolio or performance. This is a major intellectual or artistic accomplishment, which is guided carefully by a faculty mentor. In addition to the faculty advisor, a second "reader" also gives comments, and must approve the project. The completed theses are presented during the Spring Conference. The experience of working carefully and closely with faculty mentors on a significant project is profound and deeply rewarding. The close bond developed between a student and faculty member may create the basis for a lifelong friendship. The University Honors Program provides a framework within which we encourage and foster intellectual development. Our goal is to stimulate students to pursue serious research and perhaps academic careers in the future. We look forward to working
with you and assisting you in enriching your academic endeavors.
